Blightfall is the first book in a new collaborative spinoff series by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson, following on from the Skyward books. Released 1st Sept 2026 by Penguin Random House on their Delacorte Press imprint, it's 256 pages and will be available in hardcover, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout.
This is a fun YA collaboration, fast moving, engaging, and well written. Although it follows on from Skyward, it's not necessary to have read that series prior to starting this one. All the necessary backstory is given, and it just jumps into the action straight away.
The science fiction/fantasy military style academy action and world building were great.
Second book in the series, Songrise, has been announced but there's currently no updated publishing info/release data.
Four stars. This would be an excellent choice for public, secondary school, or home library acquisition. It would also make a nice buddy or challenge read.
