My Unfamiliar is a sweet YA romantasy by Mara Rutherford. Due out 1st Dec 2026 from Macmillan on their St. Martin's/Wednesday imprint, it's 352 pages and will be available in hardcover, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links throughout.
This is a standalone, very whimsical, somewhat high stakes (for a romantasy) with lots of angst and drama, some witty repartee, truly boo-hiss-worthy dastardly villains, and lots (and LOTS) of cute animal familiars including a tiny unicorn. There are lots of familiar tropes: grumpy-sunshine relationship, one bed/proximity(lots of blushing, no real spicy scenes), friends to lovers, oafish ex fiance, complicated dysfunctional family, and a satisfying HEA.
Four and a half stars, with the codicil that this is a romantasy meant for YA readers, for whom it will likely tick *all* the boxes.
Due out in December, but worth the wait. Unabridged audiobook has a run-time of 10 hours 48 minutes. Voice actor(s) not yet announced. Publisher is Macmillan Young Listeners.
