Buried in the Attic is a PI mystery and psychological thriller by Ellen Shapiro. Released 22 Sept 2022, it's 354 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.
This is a new character, in a presumably new series. The author is quite adept at character development and protagonist PI Maggie Landon is tough and intelligent, but also relatable and compassionate. When she's approached by a young adoptee, Maddie decides to help. She's an adoptee herself, and agrees to take the case which is anything other than straightforward.
The plot arc is controlled and well measured; there's a distinctly thriller-ish vibe in many places. The characterizations are believable (in some cases all-too-sadly-realistic)
Four
stars. Engaging and satisfying read.
