Llewellyn's Little Book of Unicorns

Llewellyn's Little Book of Unicorns is a guided meditation and philosophy book using the history and cultural significance of the unicorn archetype throughout history to help readers find more satisfaction and happiness in their lives.  Due out 8th Sept. 2019 from Llewellyn publications, it's 264 pages and will be available in ebook and hardcover formats.

Author Angela Wix is a poet, philosopher, massage therapist, and holistic practitioner. Llewellyn publications has a long history printing new age and alternative titles. If that sounds like this book is full of new age 'woo', well, it is, honestly. That being said, I (firmly 'school of western medicine' and about as non-'woo' as it's possible to be) found quite a lot of interesting food for thought here. This is a well structured and well written book. The author has a sure voice and a deft touch with the written word. She's not strident or preachy and I found a lot to like.

The foreword and introduction (~5% of the content) include lists of guided exercises, tips and illustrations as well as a discussion of what unicorns are and what they represent in terms of this book. The following chapters are broken down into discussions of various aspects of the archetype and how to adjust our perceptions to initiate change in our lives.

This book would have relevance to a wide variety of readers, not only new-age, alternative philosophy believers.  I was also surprised by the author's wit and humor. She describes an encounter she had with a butterfly sitting on a pile of poo early on it the book which actually made me giggle out loud. She also turned it into a learning opportunity and I came away from reading it both delighted with the mental image and having learnt something valuable.

There is also a short bibliography and further reading section for continuing one's personal journey.

Four stars, likely 5 for people who are interested in practical magic and alternative philosophy.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
